Here is a medium size pendant featuring a relatively rare stone called Sugilite. It is a Sodium Potassium Lithium Silicate mineral and its scientific name is Cyclosilicate. The color of Sugilite ranges from pink to deep purple and element that causes this is manganese.
A small deposit of Sugilite was first discovered in 1944 by Ken-ichi Sugi and M. Kutsuna on Iwagi Islet, in the southwest of Japan. They did not identify the mineral then. They described it as an Eudialyte-like mineral based on its optical properties. In 1976, Nobuhide Murakami and others published the first detailed description of the mineral’s chemistry and structure. They posthumously named the mineral “Sugilite” to honor to Ken-ichi Sugi.
Sugilite remained relatively unknown until commercial quantities of gemstone-quality Sugilite were found at the Wessels mine in South Africa in 1979. Even so, Sugilite deposits are small, when compared to other minerals like Quartz. It was also never heavily promoted and it has a short commercial history. This explains why very few jewelry consumers are familiar with this stone.
Sugilite is also called Lavulite, Luvulite, Royal Azel and Wesselite by gem and mineral collectors.
This particular piece of Sugilite comes from South Africa. The deep purple areas are translucent and there is a wide purple-white streak that runs across the surface with thin dark purple streams. I believe the purple-white streak is Pectolite with a very thin layer of Sugilite and the dark purple streams are Sugilite. In any event, the whole stone is bursting with character.
Since Sugilite has a hardness of 5.5-6.5 Mohs, I’ve decided to place this beautiful stone in a bezel cup made of sterling silver. The design is intended to be simple and minimalist.
