Name : AMELIA
Type : Minimalist Pendant
Here is an interesting pendant that is 100% HANDMADE! It features the golden lace that is embedded in resin. This lacey material is a wild silk cocoon and its gold colour is natural. I’ve not added any colour dye to it. So why is this silk cocoon so different from the others?
The common silk cocoons are off-white in colour and the silk fibres are tightly spun together. These cocoons have no holes in them. They are commonly used as face scrubs and as jewelry. When used as jewelry, they are often dyed with bright colours. These common silk cocoons are produced by domesticated silkworms called Bombyx Mori in a controlled environment.
On the other hand, the cocoon that you see in this pendant is made by the wild silkworm called Cricula Trifenestrata. In its adult state, it is a silk moth. The Cricula silk moth is native to places like India, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Sulawesi and Java. It feeds on a variety of host plants out in the wild.
When I came across pictures of this golden cocoon, I was immediately drawn to it. However, I wasn’t interested to use silk yarns. I’m a jeweller, but my whacky mind wanted to use the golden cocoons. They are so unique and beautiful. For now, I cannot use them in their actual state. They are so feathery light and cannot hold shape. So in order to resolve the issue I had, I created a shape for the cocoon. I submerged the silk cocoon with a resin mix. The surface of this resin has been painstakingly conditioned to a dewy satin finish. When light falls on this pendant, you will not only see the suspended golden cocoon but tiny gold and rainbow dust floating around it, which simply enhances the natural gold colour of the cocoon. In order to let it hang on a chain, I’ve made a sterling silver cap to fit the top of the pendant snugly. This is, in essence, the Amelia pendant.
