This pendant features a beautiful piece of Lapis Lazuli from Afghanistan. It has a rich ultramarine blue that is absolutely stunning. It has a lot of gold specks spread all over the entire surface of the stone and that is Pyrite or Fool’s Gold. I really love the geometric cut, which somehow gives this sort of stone a totally modern look.

Here’s a little history on this stone. Lapis Lazuli is not just used as jewelry. It was the first blue pigment to hold its color in the world of artists and it cost more than gold! The stone was ground into an iridescent pigment, thanks to the Pyrite inclusions. The pigment was sometimes called ‘ultramarine’. Due to its iridescence, this blue pigment sparkled when applied to the canvas. The first known usage of this pigment dates back to 6th and 7th century BCE wall paintings in Bamiyan, Afghanistan. It is understandable since Afghanistan has the most Lapis Lazuli deposits. The ultramarine pigment soon became popular in Europe, especially during the Renaissance period and it was often used to accent the robe of the Virgin Mary.

Lapis Lazuli can also be found in Pakistan, Chile, Siberia, the United States, and Myanmar. The finest Lapis Lazuli comes from Afghanistan and Pakistan. The Lapis stones from these regions have really rich cobalt color. The richness of the cobalt color plays an important role in brightening up the stone which could otherwise be dark and dull.

The pricing of the Lapis stone is affected by not only its color but whether it has any white Calcite or gold Pyrite inclusions. The less inclusions, the higher the price. At the end of it all, it’s a personal choice. I personally prefer the ones with the gold Pyrite inclusions and no white Calcite inclusions. This particular piece just about fits this description. The white Calcite inclusion (which is barely noticeable) is only on the framed side. The other side shows of a burst of gold specks on a rich cobalt blue background. You can wear this pendant on either side.

The frame of the pendant, including the branch is made from sterling silver. It has a nature-inspired theme.
