This organic-looking pendant features an etched Aquamarine.

Etching occurs naturally in crystals. It can be caused by water during the growth cycle of the mineral or by the inclusion of other minerals that have since dissolved away. Quartz, Beryls and Tourmalines are some of the minerals that have a lot of etchings.

Etchings found on a piece of crystal is usually an indication that the crystal surface is damaged. You cannot see its pristine natural crystalline structure. However, etched Beryls, Tourmalines and Quartz often fetch higher prices in the markets than their non-etched versions. Why??

The etched faces of these rough gem crystals have almost always a high luster and show strong ‘window’ reflections. This aspect cannot be found in the surface of non-etched rough gem crystals. So this is the reason why such rough gem crystals cost more.

Since this Aquamarine piece is already so attractive, I decided that the setting needs to be minimalist in style and match the organic look of the crystal. The setting is made of sterling silver. Doesn’t this Aquamarine look like a piece of ice thawing away?
