Here is a nature-inspired ring featuring the humble lichen. We often spot them, especially on trees but we seldom stop to observe them at close range. Lichen is actually a very beautiful thing. It’s not a plant. It is a composite organism arising from algae or cyanobacteria, living among filaments of multiple fungi species in a beneficial relationship.

I had the opportunity to observe lichen on trees in primary forests up in the Scottish Highlands. They thrive in cooler climate and are a lot bigger in form than their cousins in tropical climate. They exist in many colors, sizes and forms. They can look crusty (crustose) or leafy (foliose) or bushy (fruticose). The one that I like to replicate is the leafy lichen.

For this ring, the band has a textured surface of a tree branch. It is open-ended. A few pieces of lichen are attached to one end of the ring band. They are of different thickness. The one at the base is thicker and heavier. The ones on top of it are thinner. The ring band curves round to envelope the finger and the other end of it rises up and through the lichens. 2 small leaves ‘sprout out’ at this end.

The metal used to produce this ring is wholly sterling silver. There are splashes of gold all over the lichens and the leaves. This is 24K gold foil that has been fused to the sterling silver through the keum boo method.
