Vesper began with a handful of sculptural clay forms made by another artist. I was drawn to their raw unfinished look and irregular shapes. I made them my own by painting each one by hand in layers of iridescent rich gold and dusting them with a mixture of purple, lilac and lavender mica powders. The result is just the way I want it to be – iridescent gold peeking through shifting hues of purple. Then I glazed them to a rich sheen.

I stacked three of the corollas into an abstract flower, allowing their uneven edges to overlap naturally rather than trying to tame them into perfect symmetry. At the center sits a single freshwater pearl, a small, quiet contrast to all that color and texture.

The flower rests on a square ring that I fabricated by hand in sterling silver. I love the meeting of the two – the strong, clean geometry of that silver against the wonderfully imperfect, organic form above it.

Vesper is bold, sculptural and just a tad bit unconventional – a flower that was never meant to be perfect.
