Description

Name : PLANTS – BATIK

Type : Statement Pendant

This is one of my pendants from the PLANTS range under the Ooh-La-La category.

It is made from polymer clay using Donna Kato’s component caning technique. This is different from the cane technique used to create the WackyGeo tile pendants.

The canes made here are the elements only – the branches, the petals of the flower and those tiny batik dots! They are added to the scene in exactly the same way as you would paint a scenery.

You start with the background, then you add the elements in the background and slowly work your way to the foreground. This is really, painting with polymer clay.

Why Batik? With a rich brocade background and some batik gold dots, it almost looks like the traditional Malaysian batik (which has a lot more dots all over throughout the entire cloth). I did not mimic this as I felt that many gold dots would overwhelm the look.

Component caning is not new. Most people use this technique to create wonderful 3D artworks on a polymer clay sheet. Donna Kato’s method is to blend ALL elements into the background. The end result is a FLAT surfaced finished piece, like a painting. It is very tedious (especially when working those gold dots in) but well worth the effort.

The surface of this piece is left as it is made, i.e. unsanded. This is to preserve the mica shine in the metallic polymer clay that I’ve used. Sanding tends to remove most of the shine. The surface is lightly buffed with a layer of Renaissance wax.

The polymer piece sits in a raised sterling silver frame, made especially for it. There is lots of space to slip your choker or chain through the frame.

The frame is darkened so as not to clash with the colors of the polymer clay.
