Some trees speak softly.

Their bark carries the marks of time – old scars, branches long gone, changing seasons. They do not strive to appear perfect. They simply stand … quietly bearing witness to the years that have shaped them.

When I stitched this tote, I found myself thinking about those trees. So I sketched the tree with a needle and thread. Sashiko stitches, intentionally done irregular, are the sketch strokes. Stitch by stitch the threads slowly build the tree, concentrating not on the whole of the tree but the surface of its bark.

On one side of the tote, a single young shoot reaches out from the old majestic trunk. On the other side, a lone leaf softly drifts away from it. One speaks of beginnings, the other of letting go. Between them stands the tree itself – still.

The bag is fully lined with batik cotton and includes two interior pockets, generously sized. They help to keep things organized. Whether you’re carrying a journal, or the small things that accompany daily life, I hope this tote becomes a quiet companion to you rather than simply another bag.

I don’t make identical pieces. Each one carries its own rhythm, just as every tree carries its own story.

Perhaps this one will become part of yours.
