Name : VANNA MIDDIE
Type : Fashionable Pendant
Here is an absolutely eye-catching pendant that is 100% HANDMADE! It features pieces of natural golden laces suspended in stardust resin. They are wild silk cocoons and their gold colour is natural. No colour dye has been added. So why is this silk cocoon so different from the others?
The common silk cocoons have an off-white and their silk fibres are tightly spun together. These cocoons have no holes in them. They are commonly used as face scrubs and as jewelry. When used as jewelry, they are often dyed with bright colours, making them very pretty to look at. These silk cocoons are produced by domesticated silkworms called Bombyx Mori in a controlled environment.
On the other hand, the cocoon that you see in the resin is produced by a wild silkworm called Cricula Trifenestrata. In its adult state, it is a silk moth. The Cricula silk moth is native to places like India, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Sulawesi and Java. While the domesticated Bombyx Mori silkworm feeds only on mulberry leaves in a controlled environment, the Cricula silkworm feeds on a variety of host plants out in the wild. In other words, they are polyphagous. In Java, the Cricula silkworms are known to feed on the leaves of cashews, soursop, avocado and mahogany, but show a keen preference for cashew leaves. This explains why the Cricula silkworms were once regarded as a crop pest causing farmers to lose their income due to poor crop harvests. However, the situation has changed since then. These farmers were taught how to harvest the golden cocoons and produce saleable wild silk yarns. In 2019, the United Nation recognised the usage of the Cricula golden cocoons as a sustainable practice.
When I came across pictures of this golden cocoon, I was immediately drawn to its beauty and uniqueness. I wasn’t interested in the silk yarns. I wanted to make jewellery out of the cocoons. The thought of encasing them in a specially made silver casing is very appealing to me. So I explored ways to do that. These cocoons are feathery light and flat. The use of resin seems right as I would be able to suspend the cocoons in the resin so that their full beauty can be seen and appreciated. You will see the suspended cocoons with ease and when placed under the light, you will also see tiny star dusts floating about. These tiny specks of gold and rainbow dust enhance the glistening gold of the cocoon.
The silk cocoon in resin is encased in sterling silver. The design of the silver piece is lovingly handmade to mimic the lace formation of the cocoon. The ‘laces’ were randomly positioned around the resin. This is truly, a nature-inspired creation. It is unique!
