Description

Name : BLUE PORCELAIN 1

Type : Brooch

Here is a strikingly colorful brooch made from polymer clay. It has a very chinoiserie flavor and looks kind of vintage like. It is a great as a cheerful pick-me-up accessory.

The whole image was originally on a piece of paper napkin that is widely available in the market. The selected image was transferred onto raw polymer clay and baked. I enhanced the colors using oil paints.

This sort of image transfer project is popular amongst many polymer clay artists and there are many videos on YouTube teaching the public how to do it. What I noticed from all the videos that I have watched, is that the artists either leave the transferred image as it looks on the baked polymer clay or bump up the colors using alcohol ink pens. I do agree that such practices produce a bulk of lovely items for sale in a very short period of time.

However, I do not like the faint and blur look of the image on the baked polymer clay. I also note that applying alcohol ink over baked polymer clay gives the item short term beauty because the colors of the alcohol ink will fade with time, especially if the item is constantly exposed to sunlight. So I chose to use oil paints to bump up the colors. I waited patiently for the oil paint to dry (it was considerably long!) before applying a finishing layer of gloss varnish. I think that in the long run, the effort I made will pay off.

The brooch pin is made from sterling silver wire. It is fine and quite sharp. It can be pierced through any fabric with ease. The brooch sits nicely on a flat surface with the addition of ‘legs’ to the back of it. The ‘legs’ are made of sterling silver wire. Please see the last photo to understand.
